Each student will select one question to answer. You must include the page number in the book which assisted you with your answer. Each student will comment on two of their peers responses. No two students may answer the same question.
1. Discuss the ethical risks associated with conducting agency risk audits.
2. Discuss the debate in social work practice concerning what constitutes appropriate ethical practice.
3. Explain the procedures for reporting unethical behavior by a social worker.
4. What is a client’s bill of rights and why is it necessary?
5. Review with the class the meaning of accountability (who is accountable, and once found accountable what the process is); risk assessment, training, professional complain procedures, etc…, to deal with the problem.
6. Discuss whether or not students feel that social workers attain knowledge and skills that allow them to contribute effectively in ethical discussions involving social workers and clients.
7. According to Dolgoff et al (2008) ethical decision-making begins with familiarity with the Code of Ethics as well as the clarification of one’s own values. Discuss any areas in which your personal values conflict with the Code of Ethics. What do you plan to do if confronted with such a situation?
8. Conduct and facilitate a mock peer review meeting with all students sharing a case in the past or present to see how the process works. Discuss with the students whether they felt the process benefited them or did not benefit them.
9. Ask the students to create their own patient bill of right’s and then compare their ideas with a real copy of a client’s bill of rights. Discuss the similarities and differences.
10. Peer review meetings are important because…
11. Agency risk audits are conducted for which of the following reasons?
12. Discuss-Among NASW members, there is much confusion and disagreement as to what constitutes appropriate ethical practice.
4. What is a client’s bill of rights and why is it necessary?
ReplyDelete- The client’s bill of rights are brief statements informing people of the type of the type information they are entitled to know about their situation. They are also told that they can expect to be treated with dignity and respect, they will participate in decision making about their situation, they will be informed about available options, and they have a right to speak to an ombudsman or other person if they are dissatisfied with their treatment. Social workers should consider the use of clear and informative statement to inform new clients about what they can expect from the professional personnel they will encounter, the mechanisms for raising questions or seeking clarification where needed, and the procedures for registering grievances.

10. Peer review meetings are important because…
ReplyDeletePeer review permits a social worker to test her ethical decision making against that of her colleagues, either informally in groups that practitioners create for mutual aid or formally in agencies. In the past, social workers have used informal groupings to review their professional practice decisions. Peer review groups are particularly important for reviewing in private practice because they are more isolated than workers in agency-based practice and because they have less opportunity for interaction with peers. In this way social workers can be more certain that their decisions will be of the highest quality.
Dolgoff, R., Frank, L., & Donna, H. (2009). Ethical Decisions for Social Work Practice. pg 220-221 Belmont: Cengage Learning.
1. Discuss the ethical risks associated with conducting agency risk audits
ReplyDeleteThe ethical risks associated with conducting agency risk audits are the current agency procedures for handling ethical issues, dilemmas, and decisions. Among the ethical risks are client rights, confidentiality and privacy, informed consent, service delivery, boundary issues, conflicts of interest, documentation, defamation of character , client records, supervision, staff development and training, consultaion, and client impairment.
Dolgoff, R., Frank, L., & Donna, H. (2009). Ethical Decisions for Social Work Practice. pg 219. Belmont: Cengage Learning.
11. Agency risk audits are conducted for which of the following reasons?
ReplyDeleteThere are many types of audits that are conducted in human service agencies. The audits conducted include financial, safety, quality control, and utilization review. Agencies can conduct an audit of professional knowledge of social work ethics in which it includes two major focuses. The first focus is social workers knowledge of identified ethics-related risk in their field of service and practice settings. The second focus is current agency procedures for handling ethical issues, dilemmas, and decisions.
Dolgoff, R., Frank, L., & Donna, H. (2009). Ethical Decisions for Social Work Practice. pg 219 Belmont: Cengage Learning.
3. Explain the procedures for reporting unethical behavior by a social worker.
ReplyDeleteIn addition to particular forms being completed and filed, as well as other procedural matters, a complainant must describe how the alleged misconduct violated the NASW Code of Ethics by citing specific standards from the Code. Whenever possible, hearings and mediation sessions will be conducted by memebership NASW chapter where the violations under review were alleged to have occured. If the chapter fails to take timely action, the National Ethics Committee may assume jurisdiction.
Dolgoff, R., Frank, L., & Donna, H. (2009). Ethical Decisions for Social Work Practice. pg 224 Belmont: Cengage Learning.
5. Review with the class the meaning of accountability (who is accountable, and once found accountable what the process is); risk assessment, training, professional complain procedures, etc…, to deal with the problem.
ReplyDeleteDolgoff, R., Frank, L., & Donna, H. (2009). Ethical Decisions for Social Work Practice. pg 221 Belmont: Cengage Learning.
Accountability systems relate primarily to practice performance, but there is no reason why such do not incorporate additional indicators that focus on ethical aspects of practice. Agencies evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the services they deliver. They also track and evaluate systematically the ethical deciosn making of social work practioners. Professional social workers are to be held accountable for professional activities. Courts, governmental regulators, and empowered clients and patients as citizens play roles in regard to accountability in our society.

ReplyDelete12. Discuss-Among NASW members, there is much confusion and disagreement as to what constitutes appropriate ethical practice.
ReplyDeleteProfessional associations such as NASW can play a key role in strengthening ethical practice. Maidment (2006) argues that in the current context there is a need to explore client/worker relationship boundaries that fall both within and outside conventional ethical practice. The alternative interpretations is argued that it can be useful regarding relationship, reciprocity, love, touch, and spirituality, thus suggesting that the NASW and other professional associations of social workers that must develop additional strategies if they want to encourage clarification and strengthening of ethical decision making within the profession.

3. Explain the procedures for reporting unethical behavior by a social worker.
ReplyDeleteUnethical behavior is a term that is usually associated with professionals who do not follow the guidelines of their respective fields’ code of ethics. As a social worker it is important to report unethical behavior appropriately, in the work place, not only to protect the client but to protect your respective agency. In my opinion the proper procedure for reporting unethical behavior would be to first notify the person that is participating in unethical practice. If that does not work or you choose not to be confrontational you should notify your superior of the person’s actions. I think that it would be appropriate to write a letter or memo directed to the supervisor notifying them of what the person has done and how it can affect the agency. The supervisor should file the appropriate paper work according to the NASW, and hold hearings or intervention meetings by NASW membership chapter regarding the allegations, and lastly if all else fails the National Ethics committee may take jurisdiction.
Chapter 13
ReplyDelete11. Agency risk audits are conducted for which of the following reasons?
Agency risk audits are conducted because, it is essential to know how the different agencies are
doing, by having set questions and rating them and giving them a score, will let them know
which areas they need to improve on and pay more attention to. They are sometimes conducted
at random, and sometimes you are well aware of when you will be audited. The reason you have
to conduct audits is because if the agency doesn’t know what they need to improve on, or what areas need more focus then, the clients won’t receive the best quality of help. In the areas where you agency is suffering.

6. Discuss whether or not students feel that social workers attain knowledge and skills that allow them to contribute effectively in ethical discussions involving social workers and clients.
ReplyDelete6. Those with the social work degrees have obtained the knowledge and skills of perform effectively. I know personally some social workers who have a psychology but has a career in social work profession. I think it is unfortunate that there is a loop hole as wide in the profession. Those who do not have a degree in social work do not know the importance of ethical decision. They may have come in contact with NASW code of ethics when receiving the job as social work. (p.221)

ReplyDelete2. Discuss the debate in social work practice concerning what constitutes appropriate ethical practice.
While every social worker of course, is responsible for their ethical decisions it must be recognized that the code of ethics is a participant in a number of networks and social systems that support – or should support – the ethical decision making process. The purpose of the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics is to help social workers “identify relevant considerations when professional obligations conflict or ethical uncertainties arise.” Agencies that engage in social work ethics audits have the opportunity to strengthen their own ethical performance. Professional associations, such as NASW, can play a key role in strengthening ethical practice. Peer review and committee on ethics of social work practice, client’s bill of rights, in-service training and consultation and agency appeal procedure are all responsible for professional ethics.
